February is synonymous with love and heart shaped candies and chocolates. It also happens to be American Heart Month. Heart disease doesn't just happen to older adults. It is happening to younger adults more and more often. This is in part due to the higher rates of obesity and blood pressure in younger adults, but you can do something about it! It's time to take control of your Heart Health, here are some tips:
Manage your conditions: It's important to "know your numbers", be sure to have your annual checkups and know what your blood pressure and cholesterol numbers are. Work with your health care team to manage these numbers either through diet, stress management, or medications if necessary.
Don't smoke: Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death.
Eat a heart healthy diet: Limit your intake of saturated fat, added sugar, and sodium. Try to fill at least half of your plated with fruits and vegetables.
Stay active: Get moving for at least 150 minutes per week. You can even think about breaking this up into 10 minute increments. The important thing is to get moving.
