Thanksgiving Traditions

November 15, 2017

What does Thanksgiving mean to you?  Ask 5 different people and you will probably get 5 different answers.  I'm sure many of us immediately think about the amount of food that will be consumed on this day.  Rather than focus on the things we should NOT eat or do, I would like to focus on things we SHOULD do!

1.  Eat that stuffing!  Thanksgiving is a holiday with many foods that are special or homemade or things you only get this time of year.  It's okay to enjoy small portions of these foods.  With that being said, you should still try to stay away from things you can eat all year round or are not special.  An example would be corn.  Remember, just because the food is there, doesn't mean you HAVE to eat it. Maybe you can have corn the night before for dinner, that way you won't feel the need to eat it on Thanksgiving.  If there are snacks before the meal such as cheese and crackers or chips and dip, pass on these.  Again, they are not special.

2.  Wobble before (or after) you Gobble.  Don't skip your exercise on this day!  Sign up for a local turkey trot or go for a hike or walk with your family and friends after dinner.  Another suggestion would be a game of touch football or basketball with your kids.

3.  Start a new tradition.  Holidays are all about making memories or traditions.  Some suggestions are watching a classic movie together or doing a project together.  In my family we look forward to playing a board game in the evening.  Make everyone put their phones in a basket when they walk in the door and spend time with the people that are in the room with you.

Remember to be mindful and present this holiday season.  Make mindful food choices and be present with those you are celebrating with.  Happy Thanksgiving!
